Willcox family papers, 1851-1919 (bulk 1851-1877).

This collection contains letters addressed mainly to Dr. William P. Willcox, although there are also letters addressed to other members of the Willcox family. Most correspondents are relatives living in various southern states. A number of letters were written by Willcox's brother-in-law, Cyrus Harrington, a missionary Presbyterian minister, as well as cotton and corn farmer, in Mansfield, Louisiana. Harrington's letters focus on the religious activities of the Presbyterians, Baptists, and Methodists, and his own religious labors. The other correspondents describe the social and economic upheaval of the region during the decade following the Civil War, including such topics as local elections; cotton growing and sales; attitudes toward Catholicism, education, and Reconstruction policies; and a wide range of family illnesses and their treatments. A majority of the letters mention the economic hardships family members faced during the period, with appeals to William P. Willcox for assistance as a mediator. The collection also features legal documents, including deeds for land and shipping contracts. Acquired as part of the George Washington Flowers Collection of Southern Americana. (01-027).
